First the worst
The University of Massachusetts has long been known for their college basketball program. But since they jumped into Division 1 football they have been just about atrocious. In 2022 they finished dead last in the country in offense. They won one game and lost 11. The Minutemen have not improved much in the offseason and probably will be the worst team in college football again this season.
The Best of the Best
Can Georgia win three championships in a row? It’s very well possible. Even though they lost some key players on the line and their star quarterback, the Bulldogs looked to reload in 2023. The transfer portal helped with some new wide receivers and quarterback Carson Beck will probably get the starting nod. The team is Young but has real NFL Talent on its roster. Last year they went 14 – 0 and won the National Championship in a convincing blowout of TCU. They could very well win again.
New QBs – Same Dominant Teams
A Common Thread to this year’s top teams is that they have lost their quarterback. Alabama, Ohio State, Florida, Georgia, all lost their signal collers to the draft. If you’re looking for a team with returning quarterback talent I could win it all look no further than USC.
The Trojans return Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Caleb Williams. Before last season, Lincoln Riley and Caleb Williams transferred from Oklahoma to USC and brought a bunch of talent with them. Now they’re bringing in fresh new recruits to pack that team. The preseason ratings have them anywhere from number 5 to number 8, depending on the source. But you can guarantee they’ll be in the talks for national championship for most of the season and it wouldn’t be surprising if you see them in the college football playoffs. The Trojans are number 6 from the top on the odds list at Sportsbook review with +1400 odds to win it all.
Final thoughts
You will pretty much see the same teams in the hunt for it all as you did last season. If we had to go out on a limb and pick which team won’t make the playoffs from the top 5, it would be Michigan. Last season they seemed to be riding really high on an emotional Buzz that helped them win 13 games. But we can see them falling a little bit flat this season. Coach Jim Harbaugh probably should have rolled out of town on what is widely considered the most successful Michigan season since they won it all over 20 years ago.
Florida State returns a lot of starters and they have brought in a lot of high school football talent (who actually stayed within the state for a change). I think this Florida State team could do a lot of damage and possibly compete for the national championship at +2000 odds.
